I’m super excited that Jad Abumrad, one of my favorite deliverers of science journalism, won the Macarthur Genius Grant. Some part of me is hoping this will lead to a resurgence in radio (or really audio storytelling, because honestly I get most of my “radio” online these days). In this video, he’s at MaxFunCon talking about the nitty gritty of how he and the team at Radiolab put together a show.
The struggle to get scientists to succinctly describe their work in a way that’s digestible is shown so well here. And then he really dives into audio storytelling and the things he’s learned while making Radiolab. The video is about an hour, but totally worth it. The finale of his talk is about a line he heard in an interview that blew him away. It blew me away, too.
“Sound is touch at a distance.” It’s literally your voice box compressing air that vibrates and moves across space and rattles the eardrum of someone else. I’ve wondered where the power of oral storytelling lies, and maybe this is one piece of it. If you have some time, especially if you’re a fan of Radiolab, this is worth checking out.
